July 09, 2009 05:55 PM PDT
Another new episode is up at Duty Now For The Future. This week we spend a majority of the time discussing the geo-political importance of recent events that have occurred in and around the Horn of Africa, specifically Somalia, Ethiopia and Sudan, and how these conflicts could be used as an excuse for future U.S/NATO occupation. Also we discuss the importance of Turkey for the both Moscow and Washington and how access to these regions will offer one a great strategic advantage over the other in terms of not only strategic military position (see "the World Island") but also in the area of oil and natural gas production and shipment. Also Latin American developments, some cool music and much more! Check it out!

9 "No's" for Obama_111408
November 14, 2008 04:18 PM PST
It is important for the incoming Obama administration to be sent a very clear message in regards to policies with are not analagous to his promises of "change", there are several clear "no's" that must be vocalized by Americans in order to avoid disastrous policy that could be far worse than Bush.No Honeymoon No restrictions for Free Speech No to Voluntary Service Groups (Social conscription) No cap and trade No to free trade continuation No social security looting to prop up the derivatives market No to continued international conflict (China, Russia, Pakistan, Sudan) No more bailouts No to continued presence in Afghanistan and Iraq
I will expand on these points later. Thanks to Webster Tarpley for this list. don' believe the hype_111008_belief and reality

If people die and buildings go boom, you'd be disappointed. When seek-and-destroy leads to your room, continuity seems disjointed. Unless you believe that you can't be decieved, and now I feel relieved. You have found the secret to life. Still no new show this week but there are plenty of things to talk about. Coming fresh off the election of Barack Obama, anti-fascist mobilization and unity of anti-dictatorial political forces is the mandate leading up to and continuing past the inauguration. Although dire predictions in the face of overwhelming euphoria are seen as jaded, optimism mustn't cloud judgment and personal belief cannot be viewed as analogous with reality. As this election is heralded as the "new John Kennedy", a phrase I picked up on nearly 2 years ago when the Obama hype-machine was in its infancy, unfavorable similarities can be found between the rise of these two candidates.
CRAFTED LIVES: Both Obama and JFK have had their entire adolescent and adult lives crafted FOR them. Through the finest academic institutions to the highest political seats. POLITICAL INSOLVENCY: Neither one of these candidates are/were strong politicians prior to their elections, rather were able to be installed through a combination of good fortunes and, of course, good connections. ELECTIONS BASED ON HYPE/APPEARANCE: The youthfulness and modernity of both Obama and JFK were crucial in their elections, and while seemingly representing a rejection to previous administrations, were merely adapted continuations of policy. (JFK/Eisenhower and Bush/Obama). MEDIA HYPE: Both JFK and Obama experienced the good fortune of being heavily favored by the mainstream establishment media. JFK had Henry Luce (Time and Life) through his father, whose media blitz portrayed JFK as modern but still tough of Communism. Obama has...well, everyone. BOTH SEEN AS 'CHANGE': The election of JFK, always praised and exalted by those of the time as a great victory for...something, is seldom remembered through the lenses of the support for CIA overthrows (Bay of Pigs) and the incomprehensible blundering of South-East Asian conflicts, which makes Iraq look favorable by comparison. And while Obama has yet to initiate any foreign policy decisions, his own statements have indicated that he will follow a similar path regarding the support towards covert overthrow of "non-cooperative" nations (namely, Pakistan). And 2 years down the line, following this pattern who knows what kind of conflict we will be embroiled in. Liberating Africa? Fighting Russia? Maybe. CONCERTED BETRAYAL OF BASE: Both the democratic primary victory by both JFK and Obama represent a concerted move away from far-left support, which carried them to the general election. JFK, who drafted leftist heroes to stand behind him in "Roosevelt-dominated" areas, quickly removed them from prominence and influence following the election of 1960, as his deference to Cold War policy, a major issue to the left, was seen to be endorsed by his cabinet choices. Obama, similarly, relied on the mass-movement support of the disenchanted left (simply drawn from being an alternative to Bush) to carry him to primary victory, followed by a move to the right during the general election. His supporters have been sold out regarding FISA ruling, NAFTA support even in the face of mounting unemployment and the bailout of corrupt financial institutions (who bankrolled his entire campaign), and that's just the last 4 months! More recently, the appointment of Rohm Emmanuel and his advisers like Wesley Clark, Richard Hollbrooke et.al have revealed Obama's hawkish tendencies. THE CONTINUATION OF MILITRY DOCTRINE: This is perhaps most important, and something I cannot harp upon enough, the election of Barack Obama DOES NOT automatically mean a change in military tactics or operations. Military doctrine is crafted far in advance of deployment and is NOT beholden to the whims of whoever inhabits the White House. While influence can be exerted, programs challenged and funding cut, the nature of the military/presidential relationship is not conducive to massive overhauls of military systems. Future Combat Systems will continue (and be expanded), massive research and development for new military hardware will continue, biological warfare research will continue, massive surveillance will continue. In Obama's promises of utopia, did he ever once mention the desire to eliminate the despotic measures of the Bush administration? No, just how to change social and environmental programs. Did he even mention the desire to cut funding to the military to prevent future wars? No, increase the budget for research and development, more laser weapons! Did he ever mention a desire to change American foreign policy of imperialism, reinvigorated by the War on Terror? No, we stay in Iraq and we might need to go into Pakistan to stop Al-Queda. This is in direct comparison to JFK. While his "policies", rhetoric and (some) staff decisions seemed to represent a concerted move away from the Truman/Eisenhower Cold War reactionism, upon election the Soviet hard-line continued and soon enough Cold War-based MILITARY INFLUENCE, was able to manipulate foreign policy through cooked reports which acted to not only continue, but to expand and update "containment", "domino theory" and the military theory of 1946-1959. While more could be said on Obama's preference towards social policing, austere economic sacrifice and forced environmental deference, these are purely machinations of the post-modern nature of this election.
Disappointment is going to be key adjective over the next 4 years, as imperialist, war-mongering actions continue, economic conditions decline and the prospect of "change" becomes less and less likely. don't believe the hype_102208_link dump

Air Force University: Technology and the MilitaryThe Military’s Full Spectrum Dominance of Technological Development and the False Hopes of Transhumanism Josh Deaver The process of creating military doctrine is not something to be taken lightly; detailed plans of entire nations are drawn up with express goals by the greatest minds the military has to offer, often decades in advance. Using foresight and indicators of technological development, social and political changes and projected future military strategies, these groups are charged with creating years of preemptive military planning which attempts to address anticipated future scenarios without the benefit of hindsight or tempered reaction to threats as they arise. These reports, conducted by a myriad of different agencies, in and out of government, set out specific timetables for geopolitical shifts, military conflicts and technological development which acts as a blueprint for the future of the military establishment: that is, until the next doctrine is crafted. Even though futurism is not an exact science, and is frequently incorrect regarding its predictions, it is nevertheless treated as the validation for an increase in military technological development. By drawing a timeline for predictions it allows Army Research, government laboratories and private contractors to set and accomplish specific goals having to do with the development of new military technologies in order to respond to these future warfare scenarios and security matters contained within the various doctrines and assessments. These technological developments are legitimized through “total war” scenarios, contained within the myriad of futurist assessments produced by a lexicon of the military-industrial-laboratory-think tank complex. These assessments, which consistently project the possibility of cataclysmic war, beg the need for increased research and development into military applications of new technologies to respond to security and strategy concerns; results which get passed up the chain of command, eventually becoming official doctrine. This need for increased military research and development is additionally legitimized by the current real revolution in technological development surrounding many scientific practices and areas of research, all of which have the very real potential to change the course of human history forever, and not surprisingly have piqued the interest of military and government agencies and the myriad of institutions conducting research in their employ. These technologies and fields of study include information technology, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, genetics, robotics, cybernetics, biometrics, virtual and augmented reality, human-computer interaction, bioengineering and several others. Falling under the loose description of ‘converging technologies’, many related issues surrounding these innovations such as genetically modified food and cloning have been fiercely debated and contested while other discussions have been left solely to scientific institutions, groups of internet researchers, the government and the military. TECHNOLOGY FEEDS DOCTRINE; DOCTRINE FEEDS TECHNOLOGY To supporters of these technologies, these wondrous new developments seem to guarantee a utopian society, with promises of greatly extended life spans, cures to disease and other biological problems, super abundance and a sustainable environment. However grand these ideas seem to be, the majority of funding institutions and developers of these technologies see these advances more as a real solution to the future security concerns and warfare scenarios of the United States, in short-- to be used in military engagements. This discrepancy in purposed uses of these developments represents a real danger and portends a technological (if not apocalyptic) disaster if not fully understood and addressed by people outside these specialized, insular scientific communities. Although constantly changing and being updated the current blueprint of the future for the U.S Armed Forces is known as “Joint Vision 2020”, an update of the 1996 report “Joint Vision 2010”, which attempted to understand the future conflicts of the military and to prepare accordingly. Written in 2000, “2020” reiterates the need to achieve “full spectrum dominance”; the strategic control over all war fighting theatres—the land, sea, air, space and cyber-space—a concept that implies a significant investment into technological developments in order to achieve these ends, not only in money but in time. In order to “take advantage of technology to achieve superior war fighting effectiveness,” massive funding and research has been undertaken in order to adapt the latest technological developments for use in military engagements. Primarily funded through various arms of the Department of Defense, including the National Science Foundation and DARPA, various intelligence agencies and Army Research-- private corporations, defense contractors, university laboratories, think tanks and various institutions act as participants along side the military/intelligence establishment in “future assessments projects” which highlight the need for continued development of advanced military-based technology. Then based on the military’s own recommendations, massive funding is delivered to the same research institutions and corporations in order to develop the necessary technology. The National Security Agency, Army War College Strategic Studies Institute, the National Intelligence Council, Office of Naval Research, NASA, Space and Missile Defense Command, Army TRADOC, BAE Systems, SAIC, the Aspen Institute, Sandia National Laboratory and Booz Allen Hamilton are only a handful of the participants. Using the half trillion dollar defense budget of the United States, these organizations have been feverishly funding, researching, developing and producing products that can be brought to bear and used in a military capacity. Some of these technologies already developed and purposed, include unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), high tech ground sensors (UGS), active protection systems, robotic vehicles, non-line-of-sight weapons and many others, have already been developed and been plugged into the current operational picture. Through various initiatives and programs, such as Army After Next and Future Combat Systems, the Army, in tandem with the most powerful private military contractors and others, are attempting to manifest the recommendations of so many think-tank reports and future assessments into the operational capacity of the U.S Military. Billed as a “modernization program” the goal of the 14 separate FCS programs is to streamline the military into a lightweight fighting force, assisted by advanced technologies, who will experience an unparalleled amount of battlefield inter connectivity. Theoretically, using the litany of ground sensors and soldier mounted cameras, coupled with advanced satellites and other surveillance vehicles; commanders will be able to analyze a battle situation much more quickly, allowing for increased situational awareness, giving the military a marked advantage in the urban battlefields of the latest U.S conflicts. Under this idea, generally referred to as “network centric warfare”, all aspects of military technology will be connected via the Global Information Grid (GIG) wired to command and control centers which will allow for real time analysis of battle situations, making the specter of “full spectrum dominance” that much more attainable. However enterprising these technologies may be, there are more fantastic and unbelievable technologies being developed to make advanced satellites and robotic vehicles looks like mere tinker toys. It is here we begin to see the dangerous possibilities of “converging technologies” being used in a military capacity. SHAPING THE FUTURE As we have seen the proclivity of the military to use the latest in technological developments for military deployment, why should these newer “converging technologies’ be looked at any different, especially when they offer the prospect for much more effective military results? As the innovations of the 20th century based around nuclear, chemical and biological research were adapted for military use, so will be the innovations of the 21st century. This point has been confirmed by Future Combat Systems Army commanders, who state that every new technological breakthrough will be plugged into there “operational environment. Regardless of military interest, however, a growing group of scientists, academics, philosophers and interested parties see these technologies as uniformly positive and are having a great impact in shaping the scope of public debate, or lack thereof, regarding the potential uses and implementations of these technologies. This group is known as transhumanists. While the history of transhumanism does date back some time, I will not attempt to analyze its inception as readers can find countless hours of discussion regarding these subjects quite easily on the Internet, harkening back into the bio-futurist movement of the 1920’s. Transhumanists are not homogeneous by any stretch of the imagination; they encompass a diverse group of differing political and social opinions, and with the wide variety of interested participants comes a barrage of differing ideas about the purposed uses of these new technologies. For our purposes, however, simply know that transhumanism represents an idea that by using and applying these new technologies we may eliminate many of humanities biological problems and many other “undesirable aspects” of the human condition. These undesirable aspects, according to many transhumanist organizations, include disability, suffering, disease, aging, and involuntary death. Although the countless variations of concepts and ideas contained within transhumanism make it difficult to pin down an overarching ideology, it seems the principal goal among the highly fractured movement is to use technology in order to “improve human performance.” However, even with its diverse variety of ideas, political inclinations and its philosophical drivers, most transhumanists tragically still fail to appropriately address many basic questions regarding risk, equality, privacy and perhaps most importantly, militaristic intervention into research and development. IMPROVING HUMAN PERFORMANCE? Focusing on the latter, the same term “improving human performance” graces the lengthy 2002 report sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the U.S Department of Commerce called “Converging Technologies for Improving Human Performance”. This report, the result of a series of government workshops sponsored by the National Nanotechnology Initiative; describes the current research and development regarding converging technologies and goes into great detail on not only the peaceful applications but the militaristic as well. Among the technologies discussed were the standard discussions of FCS-related technologies such as miniature sensors, high-speed processing and communication and uninhabited combat vehicles; but in addition, more high tech militaristic uses were proposed and discussed including: – Sophisticated virtual reality systems for training, These ideas represent goals hoped to be accomplished within the next 10-20 years for the use in “national security” operations, stating “it is essential to stay as technologically as far ahead of potential opponents as possible”. On it’s face not only do these technologies have the ability to reshape the future of warfare, they are almost guaranteed to expressly effect and transform every aspect of the social stratum. From ethics, to privacy, to commerce, to education, to medicine: ironically however, in this report it is the military and government which are able to offer more probing insight and cautious approach into potential misuses and societal implications that an increase in research and development may bring. However, other reports regarding military uses of “converging technologies” do not contain such a tempered approach, and free of the pretense of “improving human performance”, military researchers, intelligence agencies and government scientists are able to become much more cavalier regarding the potential uses of these technologies. NOT FOR PUBLIC CONSUMPTION In June of 2000, Dennis Bushnell, head scientist at NASA’s Langley Research Center gave a presentation regarding “Future Strategic Issues and Warfare circa 2025” to the Potomac Institute, a think tank that deals with future security issues. This presentation was based on extensive futures work between NASA and over 30 government and military agencies as well as contracting giants Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics. Similar to the 2003 report, there is discussion regarding the more conventional applications of converging technologies, but within discussion of military deployment disturbing implications regarding the future of warfare, privacy, equality and humanity itself begin to be revealed. While Dr. Bushnell agrees that concepts such as self-replicating nano-machines, or “grey goo”, is a potential problem, no second thought is given to such radical ideas as “smart dust” (omnipresent sensors), binary bio-weapons, human genetic engineering, ‘co-opted insects and animals’, beam weapons, EMF weapons, infectious aerosolized pathogens and swarms of miniature robotic swarms. These technologies, developed under the guise of preventing rouge states from obtaining military parity in the age of expanded technological knowledge (see “total war”), also have the ability to create new classes of technological control mechanisms not only to be used on potential military enemies, but domestic populations as well. While these concepts that come out of the “converging technologies” debate, such as “autonomous” surveillance offers great strategic advantage for military commanders, little to no safeguards have been put in place to prevent these technologies from being used in addition to the already monolithic domestic surveillance apparatus in many countries of the world. It is this type of basic privacy concern along with several others that allows even the most casual spectator to observe the litany of problems inherent with the development and implementation of these far-reaching technologies. The world painted by Dr. Bushnell is one of constant warfare, the abolition of privacy, the increase in new and potentially destructive weapons systems, new types of organisms, ‘automated everything’ and by proxy, the increase of the prosperity gap; not only in military capabilities between nations but in society as a whole between the richest and poorest of the planet. As implementation for many of these technologies become a realistic notion, this gap will undoubtedly grow due to the fact that the world’s elite will be able to obtain commercial uses of these technologies long before the starving and destitute of the third world. This vision of the future runs diametrically opposed to the ideas of many transhumanists, who claim these technologies will be used to create a radically new world society, one is which the numerous benefits of new technologies will be used in tandem to usher in the next step of human evolution and a golden age of development. This report--along with hundreds of others--which show such an obvious correlation between development of new technologies and aspirations of military deployment, in addition to the innumerable concerns regarding privacy and equality, casts serious doubts on whether or not these technologies will be used solely for the benefit of “improving humanity.” While many cannot argue the validity of some of the more humane uses of ‘converging technologies’, including this author, it seems quite disturbing to realize that the crux of development and application of these technologies, supposed to be used to help people, is concentrated primarily around the military and their private contractors, organizations not traditionally known for attempting to better the human experience. With these clear relationships being established regarding funding, research, development and deployment and the military’s domination over all steps of the process, the inaction and lack of commentary from the transhumanists is truly deafening. If the aims of this group were truly to “improve human performance” and to usher in an equitable, utopian techno-progressive democracy, it would stand to reason that attempting to remove the overwhelmingly destructive, militaristic influence towards technological development would be of paramount concern. Additionally, a simple question must be asked: whose interest is the military working towards? The answer is simple and is stated plainly in hundreds of strategy reports, think-tanks documents and futurist assessments; these technologies will be used to assure U.S military dominance of the future. FOR PUBLIC CONSUMPTION Stories regarding gene therapy, mapping the human brain and stopping paralysis with implantable devices appear sporadically throughout the news cycles, children’s television features positive messages regarding brain-machine interfaces, robots and future bioengineered organisms and the latest science fiction presents complex allegories regarding the future of the human condition. And while these messages deal with some of the most theoretical, fantastic uses of “converging technologies” still only limited coverage is being given to the potential for negative impacts in these all-important mass media venues for public consumption. The same is true within transhumanist circles, whose goals seem to be the inculcation of public opinion towards support of these radical advances while minimizing negative coverage. Whether it is naivety, deceit, ambivalence or distraction, a large majority of transhumanism proponents fail to recognize the overwhelming influence of military interests in their pet technologies—or if they do recognize it, it is downplayed in favor of implementation for “improving human performance”. These optimistic attitudes regarding these technologies held by, not only the media, but also the very groups that are supposed to be initiating debate are shaping an uninformed public to become passively supportive when these technologies are finally implemented. Additionally troubling, with the increasing pace of development, these existential risks and other issues must be addressed as soon as possible before the wide spread use of these technologies prevents them from being regulated in any significant way. Now with significant military and government support for the development of converging technologies, to transhumanists, a global ban of these technologies is “unreasonable” and therefore, “we should act so as to minimize net existential risk” And while transhumanists claim to be concerned about the existential risks and destructive nature of emerging technologies, many of them are so enamored with their own research and personal fastidious ideas and philosophy about the future that many fail to see the inherent problems with acceptance to these new forces of nature. In fact some are so captivated by the ideas of immortality, collective consciousness and a general “techno-salvation”, that all criticism is relegate to mere Neo-Luddite rhetoric, an anti-progressive attempting to throw his proverbial shoes into the machine. Regardless, knowingly or not, transhumanism acts an effective smoke screen for clouding the debate regarding technology, instilling people with patently unrealistic notions, which fail to recognize even the most basic concerns of privacy, warfare and the increasing prosperity gap. This again presents many paradoxical issues and offers a host of questions that must be addressed. Is it in the best interest of humanity to allow a certain segment of society or an entire generation to grow up with transhuman augmentations, unlike generations previous? What kinds of long and short-term inequality will that cause? Will human-computer interfaces be mandatory for all, as some have suggested? Will there be conflict between those accepting the augmentations and those not? Will these technologies be free to all? Who will be determining the course of implementation? CAN IT BE REVERSED? With the number of problems facing the implementation of “converging technologies” contrasted with the amount of starving and dying people in the world today-- perhaps food, water, clothing and shelter are a little more important than the whims and desires of scientists and military strategists to implement advanced technologies across the whole of society. Issues of ‘common sense’ also arise regarding a technology transfer from the scope and purview of the military into the consumer culture, where the idea that these technologies will simply, one day, be handed over for the benefit of all mankind—without being used for destructive means—becomes truly laughable. Although many will claim these technologies are being developed for purely virtuous purposes; self-interest, personal ideologies and the cause of “military strategy” have hindered the potential for this theoretical, utopian future and relegated it to an age of hyper-mechanized warfare and unchecked development with the potential for cataclysmic destruction growing larger everyday. Additionally, due to the nature of scientific research and, to a degree, the specialization of “converging technologies”; a large majority of scientists involved with developing these technologies, will never speak out regarding their potential dangers, lest the possibility for National Science Foundation grant money disappearing. With the military, government and private interests controlling the research and development process for these technologies, this will be a difficult path to reverse. While billions of dollars and thousands of man-hours are being put in to adapt artificial intelligence, nanotechnology and other new innovations for militaristic use, feeding the “full spectrum dominance” doctrine, transhumanists continue to use utopian rhetoric, unrealistic circumstances and sci-fi cinematic allegories to deflect criticism to cloud public perceptions about the true realities of technological development today. With promises of virtual reality, mind uploading and other extraordinary innovations, the transhumanism movement is quickly gaining proponents and prominence within the scientific community. However, by imposing their own well-meaning values and ideas on the military establishment, who act as the true developers of these technologies, and by failing to take a critical look at core issues of privacy, warfare, equality and implementation, it becomes a simple exercise to assume the best intentions and to continue forward unabated. To continue with this unflappable confidence regarding the outcomes that implementation of these new technologies might bring, could prove to be a extremely risky gambit. Many differing opinions continue to present themselves regarding the future of technology—some believe these innovations can be curtailed as to not be used for destructive purposes, while some believe the it is too late for any effective restrictions. Regardless, for those concerned about these developments, only through massive public education, transparency in research and development, selective arms limitations and international treaties, can these technologies be limited in an administratively equitable and most importantly, peaceful way. Outside of these possibilities only dictatorial and tyrannical options remain. SONG: Butthole Surfers- Hurdy Gurdy Man Continued discussion regarding military development of nanotechnology and other 'converging technologies' for the expressed purpose of national security concerns-- i.e militaristic deployment. In order to effectively halt the production of new technologies and to potentially prevent a global catastrophe, the concept of specific arms limitation agreements must be agreed upon. Regard to the issue of planetary stability must be viewed with more importance than the myopic and unrealistic ideas of these technologies being developed by rouge states/terrorist organization or that these technologies will usher in a new golden age utopia of techno-salvation. The infamous page 75 of "the First Global Revolution" has convinently been recently removed from Google Books. Page 75 discusses the idea of using "famine, resources shortage, and global warming" being used as a means to unite humanity behind a common goal. That would "fit the bill" indeed. You can still view portions of the book from a cached link here, but for some other reason on my end all searches in Google Books for "First Global Revolution" are coming up as 'no preview'.
